Citizens UK organises communities to act together for power, social justice and the common good.
Their diverse member organisations include schools, churches, mosques, synagogues, parents groups, health practice, charities and trade unions.
They aim to help these members to develop leaders, so they can participate in public life and hold politicians and other decision-makers to account on the issues that matter to them.
Community organising is democracy in action: winning victories that change lives and transform communities.
Citizens UK vision is for a healthy democracy with civil society at its heart.
Our grant helped:
Enable the East London chapter to create a part-time role with the goals of promoting a ‘housing first’ policy on homelessness during the 2020 London mayoral campaign, and
of creating more temporary accommodation sites in East London, based on the pioneering Project Malachi. Housing first is an approach developed in the United States, which puts access to a stable home over and above requirements on homeless people to first address other support needs they may have. Project Malachi is a 41-unit hostel created from recycled shipping containers.
