Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness.
Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help.
Our grant helped:
Investment in a strategic litigation team being set up in London, which will bring carefully-selected local cases to court. Whereas the goal of Shelter’s day-to-day legal work is to win the best outcomes for individual clients, the purpose of this more strategic-level work is to set precedents that challenge the root causes of homelessness, many of which lie in the benefits regime and other legislative systems. The litigation team will coordinate with Shelter’s policy specialists to tackle potentially unlawful causes of homelessness. Targets for the first year include landlords who refuse to rent to housing benefit recipients, and councils who threaten to separate children from homeless parents. Both problems are on the rise in East London, and if they are found to be discriminatory (and therefore in breach of the law), this could substantially improve prospects for many vulnerable families.
